Active Duty Military

This page provides an overview of general information for active duty military members who are interested in or attending UWF.

We're Here for You

The University of West Florida is proud of its many students who have and are currently serving in our Armed Forces and understands the added demands that service can bring. The Military & Veterans Resource Center is here to help you ensure that your service has minimum disruption to your education. Service members should speak with their Educational Services Officer (ESO) or counselor within their military service before enrolling at UWF.

MVRC Student Services

The MVRC VetSuccess on Campus counselor provides transitioning service members, veterans and eligible dependents personalized counseling and support to guide your career path and ensure the most effective use of your VA benefits.

There is also a Mentoring Program coordinator on staff to offer guidance to students and introduce them to other valuable resources both on and off campus.

All Title 10 active duty military service members will receive in-state tuition, either by waiver or through temporary residency. For active duty and their dependents residing and stationed within the state of Florida, declare military orders in your UWF admission application and provide a copy of orders.

For non-Florida resident active duty residing outside of Florida while taking courses, submit the “Active Duty Out of State Waiver” found in your MyUWF account.

A number of factors can contribute to a withdrawal decision. For more information on the various withdrawal categories, review withdrawals in the UWF catalog. In cases where the withdrawal does not result in a full refund, the University will calculate the amount of unearned tuition for students using military TA. Unearned tuition is the amount of tuition paid by the military that will be restored to the military. Except in cases of approved mitigating circumstances, the student will then have a debt to the University for the amount of tuition restored to the military. For more information on unearned tuition, review Withdrawals and Return of Military Tuition Assistance and under Tuition Assistance.

Grade Reporting

Grades are posted at the end of each semester per the UWF catalog. The MVRC will screen for and request grades on behalf of military students using TA in order to facilitate military portal grade reporting requirements. The UWF grading system is described in the academic catalog.

Unexpected Deployment, Activation or Natural Disaster Displacement

As soon as you become aware of an unexpected deployment or activation that will affect your enrollment(s), please notify our office located in Building 38, Room 147. We will advise and work with you to complete the required steps outlined in the UWF catalog to withdraw, receive a grade of incomplete, or facilitate the course completion by working closely with the professor. If displaced by natural disaster, please notify the MVRC as soon as possible.

Please note that a copy of orders will be required unexpected deployments or activations. In cases of unexpected increases in operational tempo not caused by orders or activation, please notify the MVRC as soon as you are aware that your ability to complete the enrollments is at risk. We will guide you in the proper process based upon your circumstances, and will require official command-supporting documentation.

In the unfortunate event that you are injured while serving and require additional assistance, ensure that you inform the MVRC so that we may coordinate any on-campus resources. If you have a letter from a doctor outlining any special instructions to accommodate your learning, please give that letter to Student Accessibility Resources.

Tuition and Fee Appeals

Student appeals for late registration, late payment of tuition and fees, and refunds of tuition upon withdrawal after the refund deadline are referred to the University Fee Appeals Committee.  In order to be considered, requests for refunds and other appeal actions must be submitted within six months after the end of the semester to which the refund or appeal action is applicable.  Requests submitted after the deadline will not be considered.  For more detailed information and the fee appeal form, visit “Appeal for Late Fee Assessments and Refunds” in the UWF Catalog.

Online Programs

Military and veteran students can also take advantage of UWF's Online MBA and other UWF Online programs.
