Do living organisms fascinate you? Are you interested in using science to solve problems and make discoveries? Consider a Bachelor of Science in Biology from UWF, where you can tailor your degree to match your passions.

Why Study Biology at UWF?

A biology degree from UWF gives you a grounding in the basic areas of biology, from molecular to ecological processes. Whether you are interested in toxicology, biotechnology, microbiology or another field, you can tailor your education to meet your interests.

Electives allow you to concentrate in areas you are interested in, such as genetics or ecology, at a more advanced level.

Our diverse faculty will give you the tools you need for a fulfilling career.

What You Will Learn

You will study biochemistry, microbiology, ecology, genetics and cell biology and choose from such electives as immunology, animal behavior, hematology, medicinal botany, epidemiology of infectious diseases and much more.

From data collection to analysis to interpretation, you will learn to understand metrics and apply them in real-world studies. You will blend time in the classroom with time in the research lab—and into the world beyond.

You may apply to work with one or more graduate students in the labs, assisting with their thesis work. As an assistant, you will accompany graduate students out in the field where they collect samples and specimens and get a hands-on experience with research.

Summer opportunities abound. Summer field classes have taken undergraduates to Indonesia, Costa Rica, Honduras and the Florida Keys/Dry Tortugas.

If you are interested in another major, a minor in biology provides you with a background in biology for application in non research-related areas of biomedical, environmental, pharmaceutical and biological science-related industries.
