Biography

Patience Constance was selected as an Accounting Doctoral Scholar by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) in 2018 and earned a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a specialization in Accounting from the University of Kansas (KU) in 2023, where she also taught courses in auditing. She joined the UWF accounting faculty in the fall of 2023 and currently teaches auditing and financial accounting.

Prior to entering the doctoral program at KU, Dr. Constance became a licensed CPA in the state of Florida (2016, active) and worked as an accountant at Gulf Power, a former subsidiary of the publicly traded Southern Company. During this time, she also taught financial accounting as an adjunct instructor at UWF. Her real-world experience in corporate accounting, preparing financial statements for the 10-K, and interactions with external auditors allows her to bring that perspective into the classroom.

Constance’s dissertation research examines how investors and audit clients view critical audit matter disclosures in light of related and unrelated financial statement restatements. Other research projects currently underway include topics such as audit inspection deficiencies reported by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), auditor experience with financially distressed clients, audit/earnings quality, and earnings management. She was recently part of a team of co-authors researching how well ChatGPT performed on exams throughout the accounting curriculum. Their findings have been published in Issues in Accounting Education.

Outside of academia, she enjoys spending time with her family, books you can actually touch, and music, both listening and performing.
