Chris Lovell

CEO and Founder of Lovell Government Services

Chris Lovell was a retired Marine Corps Major turned corporate businessman when he decided to launch his own business. His leap of faith paid off, as Lovell Government Services was recently ranked No. 3 on Inc. 5000’s annual Fastest Growing Private Companies list.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I wanted more freedom. I retired from the Marine Corps in 2011, then went on to work for Amazon in operations, then for Lexmark International, then finally the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency, where I found my passion for federal contracts and federal business opportunities. From there, I started my own business in 2013.

How has your MBA from UWF helped in the success of Lovell Government Services?

Coming from the United States Naval Academy, I didn’t think the graduate program would be difficult, but it was surprisingly hard. It has definitely helped, though; the classes were super relevant to my career field and the professors had real-world experience. The degree provided me with real-world applications and I was able to make several professional connections. I’m currently working with a fellow colleague and alumni on a business deal.

What advice do you have for students or alumni who have dreams of launching their own business?

Do not have a Plan B. It will be difficult. Make it work. It’s a marathon. Be dedicated to it and committed. The reward is worth it.

How do you believe your company reached the ranking of No. 3 on Inc. 5000’s annual Fastest Growing Private Companies list?

I am always honest with everyone I do business with. What I say is what they’re going to get and they keep coming back. I hire veterans as much as possible. They’re comfortable being uncomfortable. The military forces you to step outside your comfort zone.
