Admission Requirements

In addition to the University graduate admission requirements, the department appoints an admission committee that bases decisions on a holistic review of credentials. The following criteria are used to assess the potential success of each applicant.


University Requirements

Departmental Requirements

  • Submission of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Attainment at the 70% percentile is preferred. (Can be waived)
  • Hold a master's or bachelor's degree in an area related to Intelligent Systems and Robotics (Number of hours required will depend on whether or not the applicant holds a master's or bachelor's degree.)
  • Master's or bachelor's cumulative GPA - minimum of a 3.0 GPA
  • Submission of a personal statement describing prior experiences and accomplishments in intelligent systems and robotics, and an indication of the student's goals in pursuing the current degree.
  • Submission of (3) letters of recommendation (minimum) is required from academic and professional recommenders, attesting to the applicant's potential. At least (1) of the letters submitted must be from an academic reference. Please be sure to advise your recommenders of the following requirements: All letters of recommendation must be on official letterhead of the recommender's institution or organization and must have their official written signature.

International students

Applicants from countries where English is not the official language must also demonstrate proficiency in English. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to conduct telephone interviews with these applicants. Advancement to Candidacy

  • Completion of a minimum of 9 or 18 semester hours for candidates entering the program with an approved master's or bachelor's degree, respectively.
  • Passing a comprehensive qualifying exam with written and oral components.

Dissertation

All doctoral candidates are required to work with a faculty mentor to conduct, document and publicly defend a piece of original research.
