Important Vaccinations For Travelers

Your destination will determine which vaccines are required for International travel. This information is best obtained by visiting Escambia County Health Department or calling them at (850) 595-6500. Many of the required vaccinations can only be obtained at the county health department. See  for the vaccinations given at the UWF SHS clinic. Keep in mind, some vaccinations are given in a series of up to 6 months. Depending on your destination, they may be needed prior to obtaining a passport.

Things to Take with You

  • Health Insurance ID card
  • Health record - list of illnesses, operations, drug allergies, blood type, and special medications you need. Also take vaccination records and international certificates, if required.
  • Medic alert bracelets for individual needs
  • Copies of your prescriptions

Travel Best Practices

  • Begin updating immunizations, leaving sufficient time before travel.
  • Understand that local food and water can be risky in developed, industrial or tourist areas as well as in areas off the beaten track.
  • Use discretion about personal contact including sexual contact.
  • Wash uncooked foods in bottled or boiled water.
    • Do not eat uncooked foods such as salads that are washed in water.
    • Drink only bottled or boiled water.
  • Do not bathe or swim anywhere unless you are certain the water is sanitary.
  • Use reliable insect repellents on skin and clothing.
    • Follow directions carefully.
    • Use netting. Stay indoors during hours that dangerous insects are most active (usually dusk and dawn).
  • Take precautions against snakes.
    • Check dark corners of your room.
    • Turn your shoes over and empty them out before putting them on.
