Counselor Training Program

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides a comprehensive training experience that focuses primarily on training pre-master’s practicum students and pre-master’s interns.

Counseling and Psychological Services places value on training competent and culturally aware counselors who are prepared to provide a high level of psychological counseling informed by research and practice. Counselors need an array of skills to meet the highest expectations of the profession. We believe this includes the ability to combine research, theory and practice while possessing the personal attributes that ensure personal health of the counselor.

CAPS is a generalist training facility and teaches from a variety of theoretical orientations and espouses multiple styles of practice. Our training philosophy is informed by, but not limited to, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, feminist, existential, multicultural and humanistic theoretical perspectives. Trainees learn the skills of practice, writing and professional communication. Trainees focus on individual and group counseling while having the opportunity to practice outreach, biofeedback, assessment and expressive arts.

We at CAPS value the unique cultural experience of all individuals. Trainees are educated in the balance of the science of psychology with the art of implementation to a multicultural and diverse student body. Treatment is informed by science and the unique needs of each client. Our trainees are trained in tailoring treatment to meet the needs of the individual and are encouraged to strive for humility, self-growth and a lifelong commitment to the enhancement of his/her professional skills and practice.

Specifics on Training

All pre-master’s trainees receive individual supervision as well as supervision in the provision of group therapy. In alignment with the expectation of our center, all clinical staff engages in ongoing professional development. As such, all clinical staff, as well as trainees, participate in a weekly case conference and a bi-weekly professional issues seminar.

  • Outreach
All trainees are supervised in the provision of effective mental health programming aimed at awareness, prevention and treatment.

  • Assessment
The assessment component prepares trainees to utilize several methods of psychological assessment with a focus on utilizing diagnostic tools to better inform case conceptualization and treatment within the realm of psychotherapy.

  • Biofeedback
The biofeedback component trains therapists in the physiological mechanics of biofeedback as well as in the appropriate administration of this treatment tool that utilizes computerized instruments to help clients monitor and modulate their physiological response to stress.

  • Expressive Arts
This component provides training designed to promote the effective use of expressive arts as an adjunct to traditional therapeutic approaches. It also provides the skills and theoretical knowledge needed to utilize expressive arts as an integral part of the healing process.

Developmental Learning Model

The training philosophy at CAPS is based on developmental theory. Learning is a developmental process, and growth is achieved through a balance of support and challenge. The training experience is designed to provide the trainee with the appropriate structure, support, guidance and feedback. This is achieved through supervision, training, consultation, and clinical experience. The training team works to create a balance of feedback, growth, professional ideals, respect, and acknowledgment of individual circumstance. The developmental trajectory through the training year directs trainees toward increased autonomy. The expectations and tasks for each intern will be increasingly complex as their development continues. At the end of the internship year, it is expected that interns will be ready to function as autonomous, entry-level professionals and will be able to provide high-quality mental health services. They are expected to engage in healthy reflection and acceptance of personal responsibility.
